Pupils of the orphanage No.1 in Almaty baked heart and flower shaped vegetarian pancakes on the 13th of February, the International Pancake Day.

For more than two years twice a month in the framework of the joint volunteer project of AYALA Charity Foundation and Chevron Company Anar Aitekenova, the employee of this company, holds cooking master classes in the orphanage No. 1 in Almaty. Since all the dishes that girls from the groups Ayala and Meirim learn to cook, are vegetarian, young cooks did not follow the traditional recipe and made the dough without eggs. Children used milk, kefir, salt, vanillin and vegetable oil. The girls worried much about the result, but their fears were for nothing. Seeing the pancakes getting right, they began to experiment with the form. And two girls Regina and Anya from the very first time succeeded to turn pancakes in the air by throwing them on a frying pan. The rest decided not to try this trick. Despite the fact that on that evening the power was cut twice in the orphanage the girls made many pancakes in the form of hearts, small men, flowers and, of course, they baked ordinary round ones. The master class ended with a cheerful tea party.

The International Pancake Day was first celebrated in England more than 500 years ago. During the Lent an Englishwoman was secretly frying pancakes in her kitchen when a bell rang. Frightened, she rushed directly to a church with a frying pan in her hands and sizzling pancakes on it. This day is also called a well-fed holiday. This year it falls on the 13th of February.
